چکیده

altimeter, an inertial-measurement unit, and an algorithm for combining sensor measurements to estimate horizontal velocity—the speed across the planet’s surface the lander travels as it descends. Although the sensors are not novel technology, the algorithm and flight software that combines them are new. This algorithm combines radar, image, and inertial data in a novel way to create a low-cost, robust, and computationally efficient solution to the horizontal-velocity-estimation problem. This article describes the DIMES algorithm, its testing, and its performance during both Mars Exploration Rover landings.

Autonomous Navigation Results from the Mars Exploration Rover (MER) Mission

In January, 2004, the Mars Exploration Rover (MER) mission landed two rovers, Spirit and Opportunity, on the surface of Mars. Several autonomous navigation capabilities were employed in space for the first time in this mission. In the Entry, Descent, and Landing (EDL) phase, both landers used a vision system called the Descent Image Motion Estimation System (DIMES) to estimate horizontal veloci...

Monocular Visual Odometry for Mars Exploration Rovers

Over the past twenty years Mars surface exploration has been conducted particularly by the following six-wheel rocker-bogie mobile rovers developed at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory [1]: the Mars Pathfinder mission rover Sojourner, the Mars Exploration Rovers (MER) Spirit and Opportunity and the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) rover Curiosity, where the latter is still on his way to Mars and is e...

Tracking Capability for Entry, Descent and Landing and its support to NASA Mars Exploration Rovers

1. INTRODUCTION In January 2004, the two NASA Mars Exploration Rovers (MER) – also known as Spirit and Opportunity-arrived at Mars. Before they could start their scientific investigation looking for traces of water and evidence of possible life in the past, the two rovers had to pass through a dangerous stage of entry, descent and landing (EDL). Each rover had to safely enter and descend throug...

Global planning on the Mars Exploration Rovers: Software integration and surface testing

In January 2004, NASA’s twin Mars Exploration Rovers (MERs), Spirit and Opportunity, began searching the surface of Mars for evidence of past water activity. In order to localize and approach scientifically interesting targets, the rovers employ an on-board navigation system. Given the latency in sending commands from Earth to the Martian rovers (and in receiving return data), a high level of n...
